Opportunity description

The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) offers the Global Scholars program to support researchers at the early stage of their independent academic careers, enabling them to develop innovative, high-risk, and high-impact research in collaboration with an international, interdisciplinary network.

Selected researchers join one of CIFAR’s research programs for two years and work with researchers and scientific leaders from different countries around the world. They also receive leadership training, career mentorship, opportunities for collaboration, and research funding.

The program accepts researchers from the natural sciences, biomedical sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

Benefits

Each selected researcher receives:

  1. Unrestricted research funding of CAD 100,000 over two years.
  2. Possibility to use the funding to carry out research projects.
  3. Possibility to fund students or postdoctoral researchers working with the scholar.
  4. Coverage for teaching release time when approved by the host institution.
  5. Funding to attend academic conferences and research activities.
  6. CIFAR coverage of travel costs related to attending its official meetings.
  7. Opportunities to apply for additional funding for collaborative research projects.
  8. Mentorship and collaboration with leading international researchers.
  9. Specialized training in team leadership and supervising researchers and students.
  10. Training in science communication and engagement with the media and policymakers.
  11. Participation in international meetings and research events held in different locations around the world.
  12. Joining CIFAR’s extended network of researchers and science leaders.

Eligibility criteria

Researchers may apply from any country, including Arab countries, provided that they meet the following basic requirements:

  1. Hold a PhD or an equivalent academic qualification.
  2. Hold a full-time position at a university, higher education institution, or research center.
  3. The position must include leading independent research as a Principal Investigator.
  4. The position must include supervising or teaching students, trainees, or researchers toward earning a degree.
  5. The applicant must be at an early stage of their career as an independent postdoctoral researcher.
  6. The applicant’s position must be secure throughout the duration of the program.
  7. The applicant’s research must align with the themes of one of the CIFAR programs participating in the application cycle.
  8. The applicant must have a strong research record and clear potential to achieve future scientific impact.
  9. The applicant must demonstrate genuine interest in collaboration and interdisciplinary work.
  10. The applicant must be proficient in English, both written and spoken.
  11. The applicant must have a valid passport and be able to obtain the required visas to attend international meetings.
  12. The applicant must be available for the virtual interview on the dates set by CIFAR.
