Opportunity description
The 2027 in-person cinematography training programme in Doha is designed for emerging cinematographers seeking to strengthen their artistic vision and technical skills for a professional career as a Director of Photography. The Doha Film Institute runs the programme in collaboration with La Fémis, the Qatar Museums Vocational School for Creative Industries and the French Institute in Qatar. It takes place from 4 April to 17 June 2027, and applications close on 15 January 2027.
About the Cinematography Training Programme
The programme consists of four in-person blocks in Doha. Workshops, studio practice, location shooting and collaborative filmmaking are combined with hands-on exercises, mentorship and continuous feedback. Participants explore the cinematography workflow from visual development through colour grading. The group is limited to six participants, and attendance at all four blocks and required sessions is necessary.
Block 1 runs from 4–8 April and 11–15 April 2027. It introduces cinematography, visual references and image analysis. Topics include camera fundamentals, composition and framing, exposure, lenses and visual culture. Participants also complete a Lumière one-minute film exercise and a photography project called “A Film Without a Camera.”
Block 2 takes place from 18–22 April and 24–25 April 2027. Participants practise lighting and shot composition, moving from single-source techniques to full studio set-ups. The block also covers camera movement and includes lighting and framing exercises.
Block 3 runs from 2–20 May 2027 and is the longest part of the programme. Participants shoot scripted scenes while rotating through key crew positions, then carry their footage through post-production to a finished, graded result. The work includes script analysis, visual planning, shooting exercises, editing, colour grading and final reviews.
Block 4 runs from 8–17 June 2027 and focuses on developing a personal visual style through natural light and portrait work. The Natural Light Workshop is scheduled for 8–10 June, followed by the Faces / Styles Workshop from 13–17 June. The programme language is English and the level is intermediate to advanced. The lab fee is QAR 2,500. Participants who successfully complete the programme and attend all required sessions receive a Certificate of Completion.
