Opportunity description
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers the Research Grants in Germany scholarship to support doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers who wish to carry out a research project in Germany. The grant provides an opportunity to conduct research at a recognized German university or non-university research institution, provided that prior agreement has been obtained from an academic supervisor in Germany.
Grant Duration
- Doctoral students: 2 to 12 months.
- Postdoctoral researchers: 2 to 6 months.
- Funding must begin in 2027.

- A monthly stipend of EUR 1,400.
- Coverage of health insurance, accident insurance, and personal liability insurance.
- Travel allowance, for which an application is required if the funding period exceeds 6 months.
- Research allowance of EUR 460 for grants lasting more than 6 months.
- Possibility of receiving rent support or a family allowance in some cases.
- Additional support for people with disabilities or chronic illnesses when needed.
- Possibility of support for German language courses or language tests such as TestDaF or DSH, depending on the case.
Eligibility criteria
- Applicants must be doctoral students at a university or research institution outside Germany.
- Or applicants must hold a doctoral degree, provided that no more than 4 years have passed since completing it.
- Applicants must not be registered for a full doctoral degree at a German university.
- For doctoral students, no more than 3 years must have passed since starting the doctorate at the time of application.
- Applications cannot be accepted if the applicant has been residing in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of application.
- Applicants must have a clear research project and an academic supervisor in Germany.
Required Documents
- CV, with a maximum length of 3 pages.
- List of publications, which is mandatory for postdoctoral researchers.
- Letter of motivation, 1 to 2 pages.
- Research proposal, with a maximum length of 10 pages.
- Timeline for the research work.
- Proof of admission or enrollment in a doctoral program for doctoral students.
- Approval or confirmation from the academic supervisor in Germany.
- Statement from the German supervisor regarding the ethical and security aspects of the research.
- University degrees and transcripts.
- A recent letter of recommendation using the DAAD form.
- Proof of English language proficiency if the research is conducted in English.
- A valid identity document showing the name, photo, date of birth, and country of origin.
