Opportunity description

The Danish Arts Foundation (Statens Kunstfond) offers a grant for stays at foreign art residencies for visual artists, curators and art mediators with a significant connection to the Danish art scene. The grant supports stays of 1 to 6 months at residencies abroad. The provisional application deadline is January 1, 2027 at 14:00, and the application guide will be updated no later than one month before it.

About the Foreign Residencies Grant

The scheme aims to promote contemporary art in Denmark and Danish contemporary art abroad. It lets artists and curators strengthen their professional networks and develop their practice. The committee prioritizes stays that include close contact with networks of foreign curators and critics, with targeted and ambitious plans for meetings, visits, talks, workshops or lectures. If the residency provides these only partly, applicants may design their own program of relevant networking meetings and activities.

What the grant covers

  • Stays lasting 1 to 6 months.
  • Travel costs to and from the residency.
  • Accommodation during the stay, if the residency does not include housing.
  • A stipend for ordinary living costs, up to DKK 10,000 per month or DKK 2,000 per week.
  • The cost of the residency program itself.

What is not covered

  • Stays shorter than 1 month or longer than 6 months.
  • Residencies that only provide a studio and/or housing, including refuges and retreats.
  • Stays focused only on producing work, and material or production costs.
  • Fully funded stays, stays that began before the deadline, and stays without an art-professional program.
  • Insurance, visa and vaccination costs, and expenses from previous calendar years.

How applications are assessed

The Project Funding Committee for Visual Arts reviews applications against these criteria: professional background and high artistic quality of the applicant; a professionally run residency with access to curators and critics; an ambitious art-professional program; clear relevance to the applicant's practice; and concrete networking activities such as planned meetings or visits. The committee may award less than the amount requested after assessing all applications, available funds and the aim of diversity in arts funding. Decisions are issued within 12 weeks of the deadline. Applicants are also encouraged to consider green sustainability, for example in their choice of transport.

Who Should Apply

This grant suits visual artists, curators and art mediators who work professionally with contemporary art, are tied to the Danish art scene, and want a multi-month stay abroad to build networks with foreign curators and critics.
