Opportunity description

Hani Qaddumi Fund is accepting applications for Dr. Shafeeq Al-Ghabra Masters scholraship 2022, a scholarship offered in honor of this distinguished and generous personality and in his memory.

Dr. Shafiq Al-Ghabra is a Kuwaiti-Palestinian thinker, researcher, critic and academic. He was born and lived in Kuwait after his parents traveled to Kuwait following the Nakba. Dr. Shafiq fought for Palestine militarily and peacefully with pen. After graduating from Georgetown University with a major in political science, he joined fighters in Lebanon in the seventies of 20th century, and then left Beirut back to Kuwait and then the United States in 1981 with his family. There, Dr. Shafiq continued his commitment to his cause and the issues of renaissance and liberation in various ways. He chose researching, teaching and writing to spread awareness about national issues and the Palestinian cause.

During his career, Dr. Shafik served as the founding president of the American University of Kuwait, director of the Center for Strategic Studies at Kuwait University, director of the Kuwaiti Media Office in Washington, DC, and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Social Sciences at Kuwait University.

Dr. Shafik has published seven books and dozens of researches in both Arabic and English, most notably “An Unsafe Life: The Generation of Dreams and Failures,” in which he wrote about his experience in struggling for Palestine, and made about forty television episodes on the history of the Palestinian cause. He worked to the last moment of his life and there are several works that will appear soon. Everyone who knew Dr. Shafiq, found him to be a calm and practical person, who believed in the Palestinian cause and how fair it is, not to mention the issues of liberation and equality in which he firmly believed. Nothing prevented Dr. Shafiq from expressing his opinion in all frankness and sincerity, as he was a spark of activity and intellectual and cultural giving.
