Opportunity description
The Austrian Study Grant Authority is a government service body responsible for handling applications for student financial aid in Austria. Its main role is to process and provide grants to students, particularly those who may not have sufficient financial resources to continue their education.
The Federal Support Grant is designed to provide direct financial aid to students, either through monthly payments or additional benefits. It is awarded based on factors such as family income, household size, academic performance, and study progress. The grant is not a reward for academic achievement alone but a tool to ensure equal opportunities for students from diverse economic backgrounds.
Application Deadlines
Winter semester: 20 September – 15 December
Summer semester: 20 February – 15 May
Applications are generally submitted online, though official forms may also be used when required.
Benefits
Monthly financial support ranging up to €923 per month in some cases.
Additional support may be available for costs such as transport, accommodation for students living away from home, or extra allowances for students with disabilities or children.
In some cases, partial or full exemption from tuition fees.
Eligibility criteria
Must be enrolled at a recognized Austrian higher education institution (university, university of applied sciences/Fachhochschule, teacher training colleges, etc.).
Must meet the social need criteria: family or personal income, family situation, number of dependents, and other financial factors.
Must demonstrate sufficient academic progress: after two semesters, proof of the required academic credits must be submitted.
For non-Austrian citizens, additional conditions apply (such as long-term residence, permanent resident status, or citizenship from an EEA country) to be treated similarly to Austrian nationals.
