Opportunity description

Chevening, in partnership with the British Library, is offering one of the funded international fellowship opportunities for 2027 through the Chevening British Library Coptic Collections Fellowship, designed for researchers and professionals from Egypt, Palestine, and Sudan who are interested in Coptic manuscripts, cultural heritage, and the management of historical collections.

The fellowship gives participants the opportunity to conduct research at the British Library for 12 months, from September 2027 to September 2028, focusing on the study, documentation, and improved cataloguing of Coptic manuscript collections, as well as research into their history and provenance. The program aims to contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage and improve access to these collections for researchers and the public.

The fellowship also provides opportunities to collaborate with British Library experts and communities connected to Coptic heritage, while developing research and professional skills in manuscript studies and cultural collections management.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants must be citizens of Egypt, Palestine, or Sudan.

  • Hold a postgraduate qualification, or have relevant professional training or equivalent experience.

  • Have at least 5 years of professional or research experience.

  • Be currently employed or enrolled in a PhD program, provided that the PhD is not at a university in the UK, Europe, or the United States.

  • Have proficiency in the Coptic language, either Sahidic or Bohairic.

  • Knowledge of Arabic or Greek is considered an additional advantage.

  • Have strong written and spoken English skills.

  • Have experience working with manuscripts, including cataloguing and manuscript description standards.

  • Demonstrate experience or a proven interest in researching manuscript provenance and acquisition history.

  • Have experience engaging with heritage communities or organizing cultural activities.

  • Demonstrate leadership potential and professional influence, and commit to returning to their country of citizenship for at least one year after completing the fellowship.
