The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) in Japan has opened applications for its PhD Program 2027, a fully funded 5-year academic and research programme available to students of all nationalities worldwide.
This opportunity is considered one of the fully funded PhD scholarships in Japan, as all students admitted to the doctoral programme receive financial support covering full tuition fees and living expenses, without the need to secure an external scholarship upon admission.
The OIST PhD programme features an interdisciplinary research system without traditional academic departments and allows students to work across more than 90 research laboratories in fields such as physics, chemistry, computer science, artificial intelligence, mathematics, engineering, marine sciences, neuroscience, biology, and environmental sciences.

Eligibility criteria
Students of all nationalities may apply if they meet one of the following requirements:
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree.
- Hold a Master’s degree.
- Hold an equivalent academic qualification.
- Or expect to complete a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree before the programme start date.
