Villa I Tatti – The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies, part of Harvard University, has opened applications for the I Tatti Fellowship 2027/2028, an international postdoctoral research fellowship programme aimed at early-career scholars specializing in Italian Renaissance studies.

Each year, the programme offers 15 research fellowships lasting 12 months, allowing scholars to dedicate themselves fully to advanced research projects in Florence, Italy, while benefiting from the extensive collections of the Berenson Library and electronic resources available through the Harvard University Library system.

Eligible fields include art and architecture, history, literature, material culture, music and performance, philosophy, religion, and science. The fellowship also welcomes projects exploring connections and exchanges between Italy and other cultures and regions, including the Mediterranean, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Benefits

The fellowship provides selected fellows with:

  • A financial grant of USD 65,000 for one year.
  • Additional financial support for relocation costs to Florence.
  • The possibility of receiving a rent-free apartment on the I Tatti property, subject to availability, with fellows responsible for utility costs.
  • If an apartment is not available, fellows receive financial support to help cover housing expenses.
  • A dedicated office or workspace for research.
  • Full access to the Biblioteca Berenson and its research collections.
  • Access to electronic resources through the Harvard University Library system.
  • Weekday lunches at I Tatti.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Applications are open to researchers of all nationalities.
  • Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree at the time of application.
  • The PhD must have been awarded between January 1, 2016 and September 1, 2026.
  • Applicants should be at a relatively early stage of their academic careers.
  • Have a strong academic background in Italian Renaissance studies.
  • Applicants must not be enrolled in a second PhD programme at the time of application.
  • The proposed project must involve advanced research on the Italian Renaissance, broadly covering the period from the 14th to the 17th century.
  • Most of the research should be feasible in Florence using the resources available at I Tatti and in the city.
  • Applicants must be proficient in English or Italian and able to understand both languages.
  • Fellows must dedicate themselves fully to the project for which they were selected and may not combine the fellowship with other professional commitments.
  • The I Tatti Fellowship cannot be awarded twice, and applicants may apply for only one type of I Tatti fellowship in the same academic year.
