The University of Melbourne in Australia has opened applications for one of its funded PhD scholarships in Australia, the Gordon and Isabel Humphrey Scholarship, which is designed for students planning to commence a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering in 2027 within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology.
This opportunity enables researchers to pursue their PhD with multi-year financial support, helping them focus on their academic research and develop their expertise in engineering at one of Australia’s leading universities.
The scholarship was established with the support of John Humphrey in memory of his parents, Gordon and Isabel Humphrey. It aims to support outstanding researchers in the field of engineering by providing a living allowance and additional benefits throughout the duration of the PhD.
The scholarship is available to both Australian and international students, with recipients selected competitively based on the strength of their academic and research applications.
Benefits
Selected recipients will receive:
- A total scholarship value of up to AUD 140,000.
- A living allowance of AUD 41,100 per year, based on the 2027 full-time study rate.
- The living allowance is paid fortnightly.
- Funding for up to 3.5 years for PhD students.
- The living allowance may be adjusted annually in accordance with University policy.
- Sick leave, parental leave, and partner leave in accordance with the scholarship conditions.
- A one-time relocation allowance of AUD 2,000 for students moving from an Australian state or territory outside Victoria.
- A relocation allowance of AUD 3,000 for students moving from outside Australia.
- Individual Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for international students who require a student visa to study in Australia.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be either a domestic or international student.
- Be a prospective research student, rather than a current student who commenced the degree in a previous year.
- Receive an offer of admission to the Doctor of Philosophy – Engineering program.
- Commence the PhD program in 2027.
- Undertake research in the field of engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Melbourne.
