Opportunity description

The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) is offering Funded Research Fellowship for researchers based in Africa 2023/24. The aim of the Research Development Fellowship Programme is to provide opportunities for talented health researchers based in Africa, so that they can lead research that is responsive to its African settings and can contribute to reducing the burden of disease. It aims to develop emerging African scientists through developing their skills, experience, confidence and research outputs.

Benefits

  • Fellowships offer awardees the opportunity to develop their own research ideas, research skills and capabilities, to grow their research relationships through collaboration and mentorship, and to work towards a substantial research funding proposal.
  • They offer A three to nine-month placement at a leading research institution in the UK, Europe or Africa, with additional support at your home institution before and after the placement.
  • Up to £47,000 available in funding

Eligibility criteria

  • Early career researchers.
  • Applicants must be a national of a country in Africa.
  • You need not be resident in Africa at the time of applying, provided that your application is officially supported by an African institution that meets the eligibility criteria for an employing institution and which attests that it intends to employ you locally.
  • You must be working at least 20% (Full-Time Equivalent) FTE in an active research role.
  • EITHER (a) have a guarantee of employment with a legally established research organization or a University in Africa for the duration of your Fellowship;
  • OR (b) have a guarantee of employment at a center of research excellence outside Africa and an honorary contract with a legally established research organization or University in Africa for the duration of your Fellowship, with at least 70% of your time-based in Africa
  • English language proficiency.

Host Organization Eligibility:

  • Be in Africa, the United Kingdom, or continental Europe.
  • Be an academic institution or a research-oriented industry or a policy-making organization.
  • Be a legal entity constituted under the national law of the country it is based
  • Be engaged in world-class research and/or its translation into products, policies or practices to the benefit of the public
  • Be in receipt of substantial, international, competitive research funding

Employing Organization Eligibility:

  • Be a ‘not-for-profit’ research organization operating in Africa;
  • Be a legal entity constituted under the national law of the country it is based.

The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) was established as a UK-registered charity in 2015. It is linked to the Medical Research Foundation. AREF aims to nurture excellent health research by African researchers, in Africa, with an impact on the health and lives of populations in Africa.
