The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy, has opened applications for the Jean Monnet Fellowship 2027–2028, one of the funded international research fellowships offered by the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies to experienced researchers from around the world.

The fellowship gives researchers the opportunity to spend 12 months in Florence working on an independent research project related to one of the Centre’s research areas or programmes, while participating in academic activities and benefiting from the research environment and resources provided by the EUI.

The fellowship is particularly aimed at researchers who obtained their PhD more than 5 years ago and is open to applicants of all nationalities, including researchers from Arab countries. Selected fellows receive a monthly stipend of €2,850, in addition to support for travel, visa costs, and research expenses.

Benefits


Selected fellows receive:

  • €2,850 per month for 12 months.
  • Total basic funding of approximately €34,200 over the fellowship period.
  • Up to €650 in eligible research expenses, such as conference participation.
  • Reimbursement of travel costs to and from Florence, up to a total of €1,200.
  • Visa cost reimbursement of up to €250 for researchers who require a visa.
  • A possible family allowance of €310 per month for an eligible partner.
  • A possible allowance of €210 per month for each eligible dependent child.
  • Support from EUI with visa and residence procedures for researchers from outside the European Union.
  • Access to the research and academic facilities and resources of the European University Institute.
  • Participation in seminars, events, and the research community of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants may apply for the fellowship if they:

  • Hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree.
  • Obtained their PhD more than 5 years before the fellowship begins.
  • For the 2027–2028 cycle, the PhD must have been awarded before September 1, 2022.
  • Have a suitable academic and research track record.
  • Submit a research project that aligns with the activities and programmes of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies.
  • Are able to reside in Florence and actively participate in the Centre’s academic community.
  • Have a good command of English sufficient to conduct research and participate in academic activities.
