The Japan Foundation offers the Japanese Studies Fellowship Program 2027–2028, one of its funded research fellowship programs that gives researchers and doctoral students the opportunity to stay in Japan and conduct specialized research in Japanese Studies within the humanities and social sciences.
The program aims to support Japan-related studies worldwide by providing researchers with access to universities, libraries, research resources, and specialists in Japan. It also enables participants to conduct fieldwork, collect research materials, and build academic connections with Japanese researchers and institutions.
The program offers three different tracks depending on the applicant’s academic stage and the duration of the research:
- Doctoral Candidates: For doctoral students, with a fellowship period of 4 to 12 months.
- Researchers (Short-Term): For researchers, with a fellowship period of 21 to 89 days.
- Researchers (Long-Term): For researchers, with a fellowship period of 4 to 12 months.
The research stay in Japan must begin between June 20, 2027 and March 20, 2028.
Benefits
First: Doctoral Candidates
Participants receive:
- A monthly allowance of JPY 310,000 to cover living and research expenses.
- Round-trip international economy-class airfare.
- A settling-in allowance of JPY 250,000 upon arrival.
- A departure allowance of JPY 50,000.
- Up to JPY 50,000 in support for the required health certificate examination.
- International travel insurance.
- An allowance of JPY 10,000 per month for each eligible accompanying dependent.
- Registration fee support of up to JPY 25,000, where applicable.
Second: Long-Term Researchers
Participants receive:
- A monthly allowance of JPY 400,000.
- Round-trip international airfare.
- A settling-in allowance of JPY 250,000.
- A departure allowance of JPY 50,000.
- Up to JPY 50,000 in support for the required health examination.
- International travel insurance.
- An allowance for eligible accompanying dependents.
- Registration fee support, where applicable.
Third: Short-Term Researchers
Participants receive:
- A daily allowance of JPY 17,000.
- Round-trip international economy-class airfare.
- International travel insurance throughout the fellowship period.
Eligibility criteria
General Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be a citizen or legal permanent resident of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan, and currently reside in that country.
- Conduct research related to Japan in the humanities or social sciences.
- Arrange in advance with an academic supervisor or host researcher in Japan before the application deadline.
- Be in good health and able to carry out the proposed research.
- Have sufficient proficiency in English or Japanese to conduct the research and communicate academically.
- Be able, in principle, to remain in Japan continuously throughout the fellowship period.
Eligibility for Doctoral Candidates
Applicants must:
- Be currently enrolled in a doctoral program.
- Be conducting Japan-related research in the humanities or social sciences.
- Have completed, or be expected to complete before the fellowship begins, the required doctoral coursework.
- Require a stay in Japan of 4 to 12 months to complete research related to their dissertation.
The Foundation gives additional priority to doctoral candidates who are under 35 years old and to those who are able to conduct research and communicate in Japanese.
Eligibility for Researchers
Researchers must:
- Hold a doctoral degree or have equivalent professional experience at the time of application.
- Conduct Japan-related research in the humanities or social sciences.
- Require a stay in Japan to collect research materials, conduct research, or participate in academic exchange activities.
- Choose either a short-term stay of 21–89 days or a long-term stay of 4–12 months, depending on the nature of the research project.
