The University of Waterloo in Canada is accepting applications for the Master of Applied Science (MASc) in Chemical Engineering, a research-based Master’s programme in Chemical Engineering offered by the Faculty of Engineering to both domestic and international students.
The programme lasts 24 months on a full-time basis and is centered on conducting a research project and completing a Master’s thesis under academic supervision. It is designed to develop students’ skills in research, analysis, and solving complex engineering problems, while providing a strong foundation for those who wish to pursue a PhD or work in research and development and industry.
Available research areas include:
- Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering.
- Electrochemical Engineering.
- Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials.
- Process Systems Engineering.
- Polymers and Soft Materials.
- Sustainable Reaction Engineering.
Benefits
Full-time MASc students receive:
- A guaranteed minimum funding package of CAD 18,000 per year.
- Funding for up to 2 years / 6 academic terms, provided that students maintain good academic standing.
- A total guaranteed minimum funding amount of up to CAD 36,000 over the duration of the programme.
- Opportunities to receive Teaching Assistantships (TA) or Research Assistantships (RA), with payments that may be additional to the minimum funding package.
- Opportunities to compete for internal and external scholarships and awards.
- Some international research-based Master’s students may be selected for the International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE), worth CAD 2,500 per term for up to 5 terms.
- The opportunity to work in an advanced research environment and access laboratories and facilities within the Faculty of Engineering.
- Research experience in areas such as biotechnology, advanced materials, sustainability, and process engineering.
- Eligible MASc students may later have the opportunity to transfer to a PhD programme.
Eligibility criteria
To apply for the programme, applicants must:
- Hold a 4-year Honours Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
- Achieve a minimum average of 75% in the final two years of undergraduate study, or equivalent.
- Have an academic background relevant to Chemical Engineering or the proposed research area.
- Secure approval from an academic supervisor, as the department requires applicants to have a supervisor before an offer of admission can be issued for the MASc programme.
- Provide proof of English language proficiency if required.
- For the IELTS Academic, the programme requires an overall score of at least 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in Writing and Speaking.
