American University (AU) in Washington, D.C., United States, has opened applications for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship (AU EGLS) for international students who wish to begin their undergraduate studies in Fall 2027.
The scholarship aims to support academically outstanding international students who demonstrate strong abilities in leadership, volunteering, community service, and creating positive impact, particularly students from communities or backgrounds with limited resources and opportunities. The scholarship focuses on preparing future leaders who can use their education to contribute to the development of their communities after graduation.
Students may apply to any undergraduate major offered at American University, and the scholarship can be renewed for up to four years, provided that the recipient maintains satisfactory academic performance.
Benefits
The scholarship covers the following for selected students:
- Full tuition fees.
- On-campus housing.
- Meals / meal plan.
- The scholarship may be renewed for up to 4 years of undergraduate study.
- Students may study any undergraduate major available at the university.
The scholarship does not cover certain expenses that are not billed directly by the university, such as:
- Mandatory health insurance.
- Books.
- Airfare.
- Taxes.
- Personal and miscellaneous expenses.
The university estimates these additional expenses at approximately USD 4,000 per year.
Eligibility criteria
Students may apply if they:
- Hold non-U.S. international citizenship.
- Require a non-immigrant student visa such as an F-1 or J-1 visa to study in the United States.
- Are applying to an undergraduate program for the first time.
- Have not previously started university-level studies after high school, either in their home country or in the United States.
- Graduated from high school in 2024 or later, according to the latest published requirements for the 2027 application cycle.
- Meet American University’s English language proficiency requirements.
- Demonstrate strong academic achievement.
- Have a record of leadership, volunteering, and community service.
- Show a commitment to helping address challenges facing their communities and countries.
Applicants are not eligible if they are:
- U.S. citizens.
- U.S. permanent residents or pending permanent residents.
- Dual citizens who hold U.S. citizenship.
- Already enrolled in university-level studies after completing high school.
