Opportunity description
The Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) is offering the GIJC27 journalism fellowship for professional journalists to attend the 2027 Global Investigative Journalism Conference in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The conference runs from October 19 to 23, 2027, and the fellowship application deadline is January 31, 2027; journalists from the Global South and historically underrepresented groups receive priority.
About the GIJC27 Journalism Fellowship
The fellowship supports participation in the 15th Global Investigative Journalism Conference, co-hosted by GIJN and the Dutch-Flemish Association of Investigative Journalists (VVOJ). The program takes place in Rotterdam and includes more than 150 expert panels and workshops, as well as opportunities to connect and collaborate with journalists from more than 100 countries.
Conference topics include online search techniques, investigating and using artificial intelligence, cross-border collaboration, and tools and advice for exiled media. Participants can also learn from experts in satellite imagery, climate change, corruption, and data journalism. Sessions will address how journalists can continue investigations in environments with restrictions on press freedom while maintaining high standards and reducing risks.
A full fellowship includes round-trip airfare to Rotterdam or the nearest major airport, transport between the airport and conference hotel, four nights of hotel accommodation, and the conference registration fee. It also covers the cocktail reception on October 19, breakfast on conference days from October 20 to 23, lunch on full conference days, and the award ceremony dinner on October 22. GIJN may also offer partial fellowships to some candidates. Applicants can indicate on the application form whether they wish to be considered for partial funding.
The fellowship does not cover a per diem, visa fees, or transport to and from the applicant’s home-country airport; fellows are expected to pay these costs. After the conference, each fellow must either produce a story directly related to GIJC27 or deliver a presentation about knowledge gained at the conference to colleagues or the wider journalism community.
