Opportunity description

Commissions for Developing Countries (CDC) offers a grant for Ph.D. degree holders in mathematics from developing countries who wish to make research visits for a period of no less than four weeks. This program does not support travel costs to any conference, summer school, or workshops. CDC programs do not cover the cost of accompanying family members. Host institutions are generally responsible for covering the local living expenses.

Benefits

  • The amount that is awarded usually ranges between 1,500 EUR - 2,500 EUR.
  • The Grant can cover the following costs:
  • Flight cost (economy class) from the place of work of the applicant to that of the host institution.
  • During the pandemic, grantees are asked to book the flights independently. The flight costs can be transferred prior to booking or reimbursed afterward as long as invoices are provided.
  • Travel cost to and from the airport and the place of work of the applicant (public transport, taxi only up to distance 50km).
  • Travel costs to and from the airport and the host institution (public transport, taxi only up to distance 50km).
  • Visa fees.
  • Travel Health insurance.
  • Accommodation.
  • This grant does not support travel costs to attend workshops or conferences.

Eligibility criteria

  • They should hold a Ph.D. in Mathematics.
  • They must be based (place of work) in a developing country. CDC classifies countries whose Gross National Income per Capita (GNI) is less than 12,375 USD as "Developing Country".
  • They should be employed as a faculty member of a university or an equivalent institution.
  • They should have already established contact with a mathematician in the host institution and should have a definite research plan at the time of applying for the grant.
  • The applicant should have been granted an appropriate leave of absence from his/her institution for the period of visit.
  • The minimal length of visit should be one month.

About the Commissions for Developing Countries (CDC):

The Commission for Developing Countries (CDC) is a commission of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and was established in 2011. The CDC has the mandate to manage all IMU initiatives in support of mathematics in the developing world. Besides administering the Grants Programs for Mathematicians as well as the Volunteer Lecture Program, the CDC takes part in some other types of activities in accord with various aspects of its mission like research, support of local initiatives, support of Educational and Local Capacity Building Programs, exploration of funding and grant opportunities of new and existing sponsors and development of proposals and joint activities with partner organizations.
