Opportunity description

OeAD is offering the Franz Werfel Grant for young university lecturers of German language and literature studies with a special focus on Austrian literature. The duration of the scholarship is four to nine months; an extension of up to 18 months is possible. Persons who consumed at least 12 months' scholarship can apply for the follow-up support program.

The Franz Werfel scholarship program is an excellence program to promote research and teaching in the field of Austrian literature, scientific cooperation, and the establishment of an international network of committed German scholars in the field of Austrian literature.

Benefits

  • Monthly grant rate: up to EUR 1,150
  • For post-docs: Monthly mobility allowance: up to EUR 600.00 (for stays of 3 months or more)
  • Assistance in arranging accommodation and insurance:
  1. On request, the OeAD Housing Administration will endeavor to find accommodation (dormitory or apartment) for scholarship holders. Monthly costs: EUR 220, - to EUR 600, - (depending on the convenience of the scholarship holders). For the placement, the OeAD Housing Administration has to be paid EUR 18 per month as administrative compensation.
  2. A health insurance valid in Austria and recognized by the Austrian authorities is required for the duration of the stay. The OeAD-GmbH can support you in taking out adequate insurance. Monthly costs: As a rule, currently around EUR 55 to EUR 200 (guideline; depends on age, scholarship category, and state of health). The costs for accommodation and insurance are to be paid from the scholarship.
  3. The costs for medical care during stays abroad within the EU are charged by the respective national insurance carriers. The European Health Insurance Card should be taken with you when you are on a scholarship in EU countries.
  • Scholarship holders from non-European developing countries will receive an additional travel allowance of a maximum of EUR 1,000 upon presentation of original receipts.
  • People who are not citizens of an EU / EEA country and are planning a stay of more than 6 months: If your accommodation costs in Austria exceed EUR 300 per month, you must provide the residence authorities with additional evidence of your own funds in order to receive the residence permit. This amount can vary depending on the individual costs for your health insurance in Austria and any other financial obligations.

The grant also offers Follow-up support which includes the following measures:

  • annual invitation to the Werfel conference
  • one-month research grant every three years
  • Habilitation grant
  • Publication grant

The aim of the follow-up support is to keep the scholarship holders informed about the current state of Austrian literature and thereby support them in their teaching activities at their home university (with a focus on “Austrian literature”).

Eligibility criteria

  • Target group: Only university lecturers with teaching experience abroad who focus on Austrian literature and who did not study/do research/work in Austria in the six months prior to the start of the scholarship can apply. Werfel scholarship holders can work as guest researchers at institutes and carry out special studies in libraries, archives, or research institutions.
  • Age limit: none. The scholarship serves to promote the next generation of academics, but does not focus on lifelong learning; therefore the fellowship stay should take place in the early years of the academic career.
  • Prior contact with a training or research institution in Austria is essential.

Required Documents:

The following documents must be uploaded when applying online:

  1. Two letters of recommendation from university professors. The letters of recommendation can be formulated freely, must have the letterhead, date, signature of the person making the recommendation and stamp, and must not be older than six months when the application is submitted.
  2. Confirmation of supervision by a member of the institute who has qualified as a professor at the Austrian target university.
  3. List with the titles of the courses taught
  4. Scanned passport copy (page with name and photo)
  5. Scanned copy of the university degree certificate for the completed diploma, master's, PhD, and/or doctoral degree
  6. Upload the complete list of publications (in the form: indicate the five most important publications)
