The Ibn Battuta Scholarships to Study Arabic offer an opportunity for students interested in learning Arabic as a foreign language to study at the Qalam wa Lawh Center for Arabic Studies in Rabat, Morocco. The scholarship aims to support outstanding and committed students in studying Arabic and to encourage them to develop their language skills through semester-based or short-term programs during the winter and summer.
Program Duration
The study duration varies depending on the selected program:
- Fall 2026: From August 17, 2026, to December 4, 2026, for 16 weeks.
- Winter 2027: From December 7, 2026, to January 1, 2027, for 5 weeks.
- Spring 2027: From January 11, 2027, to April 30, 2027, for 16 weeks.
- Summer 2027: From July 26, 2027, to August 20, 2027, for 4 weeks.
Benefits
The scholarship provides two types of support:
- Full scholarships: Cover tuition fees and housing costs throughout the duration of the program.
- Partial scholarships: Cover tuition fees only throughout the duration of the program.
The center also usually offers the following scholarships in each academic session:
- 5 full scholarships covering tuition fees and housing.
- 10 partial scholarships covering tuition fees only.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The applicant must have a clear and serious interest in studying Arabic.
- The applicant must have completed at least 4 university semesters in Modern Standard Arabic or the equivalent.
- Previous study at a private institution may be accepted, provided that the applicant can prove completion of at least 240 documented classroom hours in Arabic.
- The applicant must submit a personal essay of 600 to 1,000 words answering the question: What does the applicant hope to achieve through studying Arabic?
- The applicant must submit 3 written recommendation letters, at least one of which must be from an Arabic language professor or teacher.
- The applicant must submit official transcripts proving previous Arabic language study.
- The applicant does not need to be currently enrolled in a university, but must prove having at least 240 documented hours of Arabic language study.
Application Deadline
Deadlines vary depending on the academic session:
- Fall 2026 Program: Applications are due on May 29, 2026.
- Winter 2027 Program: The application deadline is June 26, 2026.
- Spring 2027 Program: The application deadline is July 31, 2026.
- Summer 2027 – Session D: The application deadline is February 26, 2027.
