Opportunity description

UNV offers a volunteer opportunityin Yemen for 6 months with the possibility of extension starting from 10/12/2023. UN-Habitat Yemen Programme is recruiting two (2) Legal Assistants on Housing, Land, and Property Rights to support the implementation of this project with a focus on leading capacity-building efforts, as well as other key activities of the UN-Habitat Yemen Programme.

Duties & responsibilities

You will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Provide legal support to the UN-Habitat team
  • Advise on legal matters related to HLP.
  • Support the identification and mapping of procedures related to property ownership registration in Yemen.
  • Follow up on legal matters on HLP claims collected by the UN-Habitat team.
  • Support strategy and policy development on HLP.
  • Support the implementation project activities.
  • Project Implementation
  • Contribute to advocacy initiatives on HLP issues for Yemeni returnee and provide legal guidance where relevant.
  • Contribute to capacity-building efforts (including assessment and implementation) for different stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Support communication with local stakeholders (local authorities, CBOs, contractors), if needed.
  • Attend the meetings with community leaders, and events and participate in groups and committees as needed.
  • Monitoring and Reporting
  • Support regular monitoring of legal issues of the program activities in Yemen and share information with UN-Habitat’s relevant personnel as required.
  • Contribute to research and legal report drafts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of UN-Habitat Yemen Programme.

Eligibility criteria

You must have:
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent in law, preferably with a specialization in property law, or other relevant fields of studies.
  • A master’s degree in law is an advantage.
  • 3 years of experience in conducting legal research and writing reports and assessments, preferably on HLP rights.
  • Relevant experience after receipt of the required academic qualification in the relevant field to coordination, administration, and project management.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and word processing, spreadsheets, Microsoft Access, and other applications.
  • Experience in establishing inter-relationships with counterparts and organizations.
  • Good interpersonal, networking, and communication skills.
  • Previous work experience in Nineveh Governorate.
  • Excellent command of English and Arabic, both oral and written.
  • Adaptability and flexibility.
  • Planning and organizing skills.
  • Respect for diversity.
  • Working in Teams.
Please note: Candidate must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment and be aged 27 - 80.
