The National Center for Theatre, Music and Folk Arts in Egypt has opened submissions for the second 2026 edition of the Children’s Theatre Playwriting Competition, a competition aimed at writers and creatives interested in writing theatrical works for children and students.
The competition includes two main categories: playwriting for school theatre and curriculum dramatization. It aims to encourage the creation of new theatrical texts that contribute to developing children’s theatre and supporting the use of theatre in the educational process.
Participants will have the opportunity to compete for cash prizes in both categories, as well as the possibility of having the winning texts published among the publications of the National Center for Theatre, Music and Folk Arts, as deemed appropriate by the Center.
Benefits
The competition offers the same prizes in each category:
- First Place: EGP 10,000.
- Second Place: EGP 8,000.
- Third Place: EGP 6,000.
Eligibility criteria
- The applicant must be a writer or creative individual interested in playwriting for children and students.
- The applicant must hold a valid Egyptian national ID card, as copies of both sides of the ID are required as part of the application documents.
- Each applicant may submit only one play script.
- The applicant must choose only one competition category: School Theatre or Curriculum Dramatization.
- The submitted script must be new, original, and entirely the applicant’s own work.
- The script must not have previously won another competition.
- The script must not have been previously published or performed on stage.
- The script must not exceed 50 A4 pages.
- In the Curriculum Dramatization category, the script must be inspired by an officially approved school curriculum for the 2026–2027 academic year and must be written in Modern Standard Arabic.
- The applicant must declare that they hold the full intellectual property rights to the submitted work.
Participation Requirements
The submitted script must:
- Be a new work that has not previously won any other competition.
- Not have been previously published or performed on stage.
- Be written in either Modern Standard Arabic or colloquial Arabic, except for the Curriculum Dramatization category.
- Be limited to one play script per applicant.
- Be submitted under one category only, without participating in both categories.
- Clearly specify the selected category and the educational level targeted by the script.
- Not exceed 50 A4 pages.
