Opportunity description

The University of Manchester PhD in Business and Management is a doctoral research program for applicants developing advanced research in business and management, with the option to be considered for internal studentships and funding competitions. The program begins in September 2027 and is taught in person in Manchester. The current deadline for most internal funding competitions is 1 December 2026; applicants with external funding or self-funding must submit their program application by 30 June 2027.

About the Business and Management PhD

The PhD takes four years full-time or eight years part-time, with both modes based on in-person study. It provides advanced research training and supports innovative research across business and management. Research themes include marketing management and strategy, consumer behaviour, business informatics, decision sciences, operations and supply chain management, and data science. Research may often be based within the Division of Management Sciences and Marketing.

Researchers join research centres and groups and take part in their academic activities. This includes organising external seminars, presenting work at internal seminars, and designing and presenting posters about their PhD. The training program includes research sessions, workshops, and assessed work. Its timetable runs from September to May each year. Full-time researchers normally complete the training and assessment in their first year; part-time researchers may complete the research training over two years. Additional elective workshops may be chosen in years two and three. Progress is also assessed through annual progress reviews.

Scholarships, studentships and awards are available for UK and overseas postgraduate researchers, but the page does not promise funding or state a specific award amount. Applicants seeking University of Manchester funding must indicate the competitions they want to be considered for in their program application. Some awards require nomination by a proposed supervisor, so applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss funding and suitability with that supervisor in advance.
