Opportunity description
The scholarship aims to assist writers who find it difficult to balance writing with employment needed to cover living expenses. Each recipient receives GBP 18,000, paid in monthly installments over 12 months. Writers working on non-fiction books that require additional research time may, at the foundation’s discretion, receive support for up to 18 months.
The scholarship accepts proposals for adult fiction and non-fiction books. It gives selected writers the opportunity to focus on their writing and may also provide professional mentorship from an established writer or publisher after the manuscript is completed.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must:
- Have been born in Africa, or have two parents who were both born in Africa.
- Write in English.
- Have previously published a piece of writing in English that was offered for sale.
- Provide clear evidence that the work was published and offered for sale.
- Submit a published excerpt of between 2,000 and 5,000 words.
- Propose a new full-length book to be written in English.
- Submit a work written by one individual author rather than a co-authored project.
- Commit to submitting at least 10,000 new words each month during the scholarship period.
- Not use artificial intelligence tools to write the submitted excerpt or book proposal.
Required Documents
The application must include the following seven items:
- An excerpt of between 2,000 and 5,000 words from a published work available for sale, submitted in Word format.
- Evidence that the work was published.
- Evidence that the work was offered for sale.
- A description of between 400 and 1,000 words outlining the proposed new book.
- An official document proving that the applicant, or both of the applicant’s parents, were born in Africa.
- A personal biography of between 200 and 300 words.
- An explanation of how the applicant learned about the scholarship.
