Paul Mellon Centre Publication Grants up to £10,000

Paul Mellon Centre is offering Publication Grants, Publication Grants are offered in Autumn to publishers, institutions and/or authors to offset costs incurred in producing works of scholarship in print or in other media. Publication Grants are intended to make possible publications and articles on the subject of British Art and Architecture which would otherwise not appear or which would appear in reduced specification.

• Joint applications from Authors and Publishers may be considered for a maximum of £10,000 (£7,000 towards production costs and £3,000 towards the reproduction costs incurred by the Author) with the award being paid in a lump sum to the Publisher.
• Alternatively, a Publisher may apply separately for publishing costs of up to £7,000 or an Author may apply separately for costs concerning image reproductions of up to £3,000. Only one grant application can be made per publication.

1. Our funding programme supports scholarship, academic research and the dissemination of knowledge in the fields of British art and architectural history, and of British visual culture understood more broadly, from the medieval period to the present day. All supported publications must have a clear art-historical perspective, including those that focus on recent or contemporary artistic practice. All applications must demonstrate that British art, architecture or visual culture provides a substantial focus for their publication. Applications will be assessed according to their academic rigour, originality, and contribution to scholarship. We do not fund research publications focusing on archaeology, current architecture practice, or the performing arts.
2. Applications will be considered for both long (monographs, catalogues, edited volumes) and short form (articles) texts. Applications to support the publication of exhibition catalogues are also accepted.
3. Publication projects should be ready to go to press or appear online within two years from January 2023. The Centre does not make any retrospective awards for books already published nor will it accept applications for funding for books due to be published before the end of 2022.

How to apply: 

1. To apply for a Publication Grant you must use our online system at grants.paul-mellon-centre.ac.uk. Once registered you will be able to fill out the online application form (example of which can be downloaded below) and provide the details of one referee. The option to provide the referee details will be available once the application is submitted. We will contact the nominated referee with details on how they submit their reference which must be completed through our online system and must be no more than 500 words.
2. Applications and nominated referee details must be received by the application deadline, referees have an extra ten days to then complete their reference.
3. Requirements:

• A copy of the published work must be sent to the Paul Mellon Centre on completion
• The Paul Mellon Centre must be acknowledged within the published work, guidelines on this will be provided to all successful applicants
