Opportunity description

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation offers an annual scholarship to support outstanding doctoral students conducting research in the humanities and social sciences on important issues related to Canada and its future.

The scholarship is not limited to financial support. It also includes a leadership development, networking, and public engagement program, as well as opportunities to interact with researchers, mentors, and experts. This helps scholars turn the outcomes of their research into academic and social impact.

Benefits

The total funding value reaches up to CAD 210,000 over three years and includes:
  1. An annual stipend of up to CAD 50,000 for three years to cover tuition fees and living expenses.
  2. An annual allowance of up to CAD 20,000 for three years to cover research, travel, and professional networking.
  3. Membership in a community that includes scholars, mentors, fellows, and experts.
  4. Participation in training sessions, events, and academic and leadership programs.
  5. Lifetime membership in the Foundation’s alumni network, which includes more than 500 members.
  6. Possibility of combining the scholarship with some other sources of funding, with the stipend amount adjusted according to the value of the additional funding.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. The applicant must be enrolled in the first or second year of a doctoral program at the time of application.
  2. The doctoral program must be research-based and lead to a thesis, dissertation, or academic publication.
  3. The applicant must be studying in a field related to the humanities or social sciences, or their research question must fall within these fields.
  4. The research must be related to the future of Canada or Canada’s role in the world.
  5. The research must align with at least one of the Foundation’s four themes.
  6. The applicant must demonstrate academic excellence and strong intellectual and research ability.
  7. The applicant must have experience in leadership, community engagement, or knowledge sharing.
  8. The applicant must be able to communicate effectively in English or French.

Required Documents

The application usually includes:

  1. Online application form.
  2. CV/resume.
  3. Academic transcripts.
  4. Description of the doctoral research project, its objectives, and methodology.
  5. Information about community engagement, leadership, and achievements.
  6. Recommendation letter from the thesis supervisor or a former academic professor.
  7. A second academic recommendation letter.
  8. A non-academic recommendation letter explaining the applicant’s character and community commitment.

Students of all Arab nationalities may apply if they are international students enrolled at a Canadian university and are in the first or second year of their PhD.

However, an Arab student who lives outside Canada and studies at an Arab university or another foreign university outside Canada is not eligible, unless they are a Canadian citizen.
