Opportunity description

The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation 2026 is a funded Japanese scholarship offered annually to international students who wish to pursue master’s or PhD studies at universities in Japan. The scholarship aims to support young researchers and future leaders from around the world by providing monthly financial support and the opportunity to study and conduct research within an advanced academic environment in Japan.

The foundation also focuses on promoting cultural exchange and building an international network of students and researchers who can contribute to global development and cooperation.

Benefits

  • The scholarship will be provided every month throughout the minimum period required to acquire the degree.
  • The amount of scholarship depends on the differs based on the period as below:
  1. ¥200,000 per month for 1 ~ 2 years degree
  2. ¥180,000 per month for 3 years degree
  3. ¥150,000 per month for 4 ~ 5 years degree

Eligibility criteria

  • This scholarship is open to foreign students who study or plan to study in Japanese graduate school for doctoral or master’s degree.
  • The student who does not possess Japanese citizenship 
  • All nationalities and research fields are welcome.
  • To be eligible, the student applying for the PhD program must start the PhD course by the age of 35.
  • The student applying for the master’s program must start the master course by the age of 30 (No exception).

About Honjo International Scholarship Foundation:

The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation (HISF) was approved by the Minister of Education as an incorporated scholarship foundation on December 25th, 1996. Its establishment was financed by the late Mr. Masanori Honjo, founder of ltoen, Ltd., who donated to the Foundation personal assets worth ¥200 million in cash and one million stocks of his company as the Foundation's seed capital, as well as another ¥100 million in cash as working capital. The Foundation was approved by the authorities as a Specified Corporation in the Public's Interest in March, 1998. The Foundation's focus is on those bright students who have the potential to become outstanding leaders in developing nations in the future, to whom the Foundation provides scholarship in the hope that such nations will develop in peace.
