The University of British Columbia (UBC), in conjunction with the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies, offers the Killam Doctoral Scholarship to top doctoral candidates. These scholarships are the most prestigious awards available to graduate students at UBC.
The Killam Scholarship and Prize Programmes were established in memory of Izaak Walton Killam through the Will of his wife, Dorothy Johnston Killam, and through gifts made during her lifetime. Their primary purpose is to support advanced education and research at five Canadian universities and the Canada Council for the Arts.
Currently, the Killam Doctoral Scholarship provides an annual stipend valued at $40,000 for two years.
Requirements:
- Applicants must have completed no more than 24 months of doctoral study as of 1 September 2025.
Selection Process:
- Research ability and potential – 50%: Quality of research proposal, methodology, and significance of research.
- Relevant experience and achievements – 50%: Academic records, professional and extracurricular activities.
Application Documents:
- A bibliography for the proposed research.

Eligibility criteria
Must be enrolled in a full-time doctoral program at the University of British Columbia (UBC).
Must have completed less than 24 months of doctoral study by the start of the scholarship (usually September).
The scholarship is open to both Canadian and international students.
If eligible for the CGS-D (Tri-Agency) award, you must apply for it first.
Must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement (typically with a strong GPA).
A complete application must be submitted by the deadline (September 9, 2025).
Must have a strong research proposal with clear academic value.
Must provide proof of English language proficiency if English is not your first language.
