Opportunity description

Homeawe announces a volunteer opportunity in the field of wildlife basic education. Children are between the ages of 9 and 18 years old, and the lessons will cover; ecosystem, wildlife crime, anti-poaching, animal impacts and increasing knowledge, with the aim of improving the community and animals of South Africa.

Duties & responsibilities

You will volunteer for 25 hours per week to do the following tasks:

  • Animal care
  • Teaching
  • Construction and repair
  • Teaching groups of 8 children aged 13-15.
  • The lessons will cover topics such as ecosystems, wildlife crime, anti-poaching, animal impacts and knowledge building, with the aim of improving South Africa for both the community and the animals.
  • Various group discussions will be held with the children on social issues such as safe sex or drug abuse, which are very important and widespread in South Africa, especially in the areas where the children come from.
  • The lessons will be conducted partly in the classroom and partly in the forest or during morning work with the animals. All lessons will include informal and fun activities.

Eligibility criteria

  • You must have at least an intermediate level of English.
  • You must be over 18 years old.
  • Singles and married couples can apply for this opportunity.
  • You can register for this program throughout the year except for the exam period for students, as they will not be present in the reserve, and therefore you cannot register during the following periods:
    • 22/5/2024 - 9/6/2024
    • 13/11/2024 - 1/12/2024
  • Volunteering in the reserve begins and ends on Saturday.
  • Vacation days: Two days a week.
  • Minimum volunteer period: One week (preference is given to those who choose a longer period).
