Eligibility criteria
Applicants may apply if they:
- Are 18 years old or older.
- Are photographers or visual storytellers from any country in the world; international applications are welcome.
- Do not necessarily need to be established professional photographers or professional photojournalists.
- Have either a new photography project they want to begin or an ongoing project that requires funding to complete the photography phase.
- Are working on a documentary or photojournalistic project addressing an important humanitarian, social, cultural, environmental, scientific, medical, or political issue.
- Are not current students applying to the separate W. Eugene Smith Student Grant; applicants cannot apply to both grants at the same time.
Application Requirements
The application includes:
- A Biography of no more than 1,500 characters.
- An optional CV.
- A brief project description of up to 2,000 characters.
- A detailed project proposal of up to 3,000 characters explaining how the funding will be used.
- Up to 40 images representing the proposed project or previous work that demonstrates the applicant’s style and ability to carry out the project.
