Program Description

The HKU Business School offers academic programs that combine business administration, economics, finance, technology, and data analytics. The school adopts a multidisciplinary approach drawing on six main academic areas: Accounting and Law, Economics, Finance, Innovation and Information Management, Management and Strategy, and Marketing.

The programs focus on developing the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to work in international markets. Eligibility

Admission Requirements for Bachelor’s Programs

Requirements vary depending on the applicant’s secondary school qualification and chosen program. General requirements include:

  • Holding a recognized secondary school certificate or international qualification that qualifies the applicant for university admission.
  • Achieving strong academic results, as admission is highly competitive.
  • Meeting specific mathematics requirements for certain economics, finance, and data analytics programs.
  • Submitting the secondary school certificate, academic transcripts, and predicted grades when required.
  • Providing an academic recommendation letter, either optionally or when requested by the program.
  • Demonstrating English language proficiency.
  • Attending an interview if shortlisted.
  • Applying directly to the university through its official online application system.

English language proficiency may be demonstrated through:

  • IELTS Academic: A minimum overall score of 6.5.
  • TOEFL iBT: A minimum score of 93 under the previous scoring system.
  • Other international qualifications, such as the IB or A-Levels, subject to the university’s specified requirements.

Admission Requirements for Master’s Programs

General requirements for specialized master’s programs include:

  • Holding a recognized bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Providing two referee reports, with at least one submitted by an academic referee.
  • Submitting a résumé, university degree certificate, and academic transcript.
  • Providing evidence of professional experience or internships, if available.
  • Submitting a personal statement and supporting professional documents when required.
  • Demonstrating English language proficiency if the applicant’s previous university education was not conducted in English.
  • Completing a video recording or additional assessment if requested.
  • GMAT or GRE scores are generally not mandatory, but a strong result may strengthen the application.

General English language requirements for master’s programs include:

  • IELTS: A minimum overall score of 6.0, with no individual component below 5.5.
  • TOEFL: A minimum score of 80 for tests taken before January 21, 2026, or 4.5 under the new TOEFL scoring system for tests taken after that date.
  • English language test results must be no more than two years old.

Admission Requirements for Doctoral Programs

Core requirements include:

  • Holding a bachelor’s degree with first-class honours or an equivalent qualification.
  • Alternatively, holding an honours bachelor’s degree together with a master’s degree.
  • Submitting a research proposal.
  • Providing academic transcripts and graduation certificates.
  • Submitting two academic recommendation reports.
  • Providing a GMAT or GRE score.
  • Achieving an IELTS score of at least 6.5, with no component below 6.0, or a TOEFL iBT score of at least 85.
  • Demonstrating the readiness and ability to conduct independent academic research.

Program Structure

Most four-year bachelor’s programs consist of 240 academic credits and generally include:

  • Language and academic communication courses.
  • Common Core university education courses.
  • Courses in artificial intelligence literacy and related skills.
  • Shared foundation courses in business and economics.
  • Compulsory courses for the chosen major.
  • Advanced elective courses.
  • An optional second major or minor.

The Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Laws double-degree program requires the completion of 300 credits over five years.

For international students admitted to the Faculty of Business and Economics for the 2026/2027 academic year, the annual tuition fee is:
