Meteorological Background Operations Online Course: The Science of Weather

edX offers an online course in Meteorological Background Operations: The Science of Weather. The weather forecasts we see every day are based on a combination of meteorological sensor networks and extensive computer modeling. Before the advent of these technologies, weather forecasts were made by different methods such as distinguishing cloud formations and wind directions. In this course, you will explore the science behind weather systems by teaching the observational skills needed to forecast the weather without the use of technical tools or computer models.
You will learn both of the following through this course:

• The role of air, water, and wind in weather systems.
• How to estimate local wind speed and direction.
• How to avoid being struck by lightning.
• How to identify the different types and features of clouds.
• How to describe the characteristics of thunderstorms and tornadoes.
• How to collect and interpret data and observations to predict the weather for the next day.
• Advantages and disadvantages of weather forecasting methods.
• The butterfly effect and its application to weather systems.
• The role of air, water, and wind in weather systems.

Benefits:

• You will get this course in just 6 weeks for 3-5 hours per week.
• In this course, you will learn at your own pace.
• You will get this course for free.
• You can enroll in the Verified track for $99 USD, and you will get a certificate that you can share upon completion of the course, and it will also give you access to assignments and exams.
