Opportunity description

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is offering a consultancy opportunity in Tunisia for the position of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) Consultant – Type B, aimed at providing psychological assessments, counseling, and psychosocial support services to migrants and other vulnerable groups, while contributing to improving their mental well-being and access to specialized care.

The consultant will work within IOM’s Migration Health Division (MHD) in Tunisia, under the direct supervision of the Migration Health Officer and in coordination with physicians, nurses, and other relevant health professionals.

The role focuses on providing individual psychological counseling, identifying beneficiaries’ psychological and social needs, delivering short-term psychological interventions, and following up on cases that require specialized services, while adhering to professional confidentiality, data protection standards, and respect for cultural diversity.

Duties & responsibilities

  1. Conduct psychological assessments and identify needs: Carry out psychological and psychosocial assessments for beneficiaries, identify cases requiring urgent intervention or specialized mental health care, and assess vulnerability and risk factors.

  2. Provide psychological support and counseling: Deliver individual counseling sessions and short-term psychological and psychosocial interventions, help beneficiaries cope with anxiety, psychological stress, and adjustment difficulties, and provide practical coping strategies.

  3. Follow up on cases and coordinate medical care: Monitor beneficiaries’ progress, refer them to appropriate mental health services, and participate in case discussions with the multidisciplinary medical team to ensure continuity of care.

  4. Documentation and reporting: Confidentially document assessments, counseling sessions, and psychological interventions, prepare activity and case reports, and contribute to improving referral procedures and mental health service delivery tools.

Eligibility criteria

Educational Qualifications

  • Hold a university degree in Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or a closely related field from an accredited academic institution.

  • Possess professional registration, a license, or legal authorization to practice psychology in Tunisia, where required.

Required Experience

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas:

    • Psychological assessment.

    • Psychological counseling.

    • Mental health.

    • Psychosocial support.

  • Previous experience providing direct psychological services to vulnerable populations is considered a significant advantage.

Required Skills

  • Strong skills in psychological assessment, counseling, and communication with beneficiaries.

  • Ability to identify urgent mental health cases and refer them to appropriate specialized services.

  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

  • Ability to work sensitively, respectfully, and without discrimination with beneficiaries from diverse cultural backgrounds.

  • Ability to make appropriate professional decisions within the scope of practice.

  • Good organizational skills for documenting and following up on cases.

  • Commitment to maintaining the confidentiality of psychological and medical information and protecting beneficiaries’ data.
