Bristol Short Story Prize is now available for writers and Writing enthusiasts all over the world. The competition is open to all published and unpublished writers.



Benefits

  • 20 stories will be shortlisted and published in Bristol Short Story Prize Anthology Volume 14 by Tangent Books. The winner and 2 runners up will be selected from the shortlist and announced at an awards ceremony in October 2022.
  • 1st prize is £1,000, 2nd prize is £500, 3rd prize is £250. 17 further prizes of £100 will be presented to the remaining shortlisted writers. 
  • All shortlisted writers will receive 2 free copies of the anthology. Prizes will be sent to any writer on the shortlist who is unable to attend the awards ceremony.
  • The Sansom Award, in recognition of the contribution to Bristol publishing of John and Angela Sansom at Redcliffe Press, will be presented to the highest placed story by a Bristol writer. The Sansom Award winner will receive £100 and their story will be published in Bristol 24/7 magazine.


Eligibility criteria

  • Entries must be previously unpublished with a maximum word count of 4,000 words, there is no minimum word count. 
  • All entries must be in English.
  • Entrants must be over 16 years old on the closing date, May 4th 2022.
  • Stories can be on any theme or subject and are welcome in any style including graphic, verse or genre-based (Crime, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Historical, Horror, Romance, Children’s etc..) .
  • Entrants may enter as many stories as they like. 
  • There is an entry fee of £9 for each story submitted to the 2022 Bristol Short Story Prize. Payment for online entries to the 2022 Bristol Short Story Prize should be made from here.
  • Entries will not be returned. Please keep a copy. No corrections or alterations can be made after receipt of an entry.
  • Entries must be entirely the work of the entrant and must never have been previously published, in print or online (including self-published, ebook, magazines, journals, websites, blogs, social network sites), or broadcast or won a prize in another writing competition on or before October 9th 2021.
  • Any entrant wishing to withdraw a story from the 2021 Bristol Short Story Prize before the closing date and time of midnight (BST) May 4th 2022 will receive a full refund. No withdrawn stories will be refunded after the closing date and time of midnight (BST) May 4th 2022.
