The Penguin Student Design Award is now available for designers all over the world. This competition aims to discover and nurture the next generation of design and illustration talents. Each year the competition gives participants the opportunity to experience real cover design briefs first-hand across a choice of non-fiction, fiction and children’s titles. Three emerging creatives then win £1,000 in prize money as well as a paid work placement at Penguin Random House UK.
Eligibility and Conditions:-
- The competition is open to anyone studying on a Further Education or Higher Education course – part time or full time, in any subject and at any level.
- Entrants must be aged 18 or over by 1 July 2021.
- The competition is not open to graphic design professionals.
- Students may enter a maximum of one design in each of the three categories.
Competition Categories:-
Adult Fiction Cover Award
In this category, you should design a contemporary, creative and exciting cover for a book, which was first published in 2000.
Whilst this book is a deeply complex meditation on family, friendship, gender and diaspora culture, it is also very entertaining, quick witted and often very funny.
The cover should make it feel very accessible and immediately ‘pickupable’ while representing the themes expressed in the narrative.
The winning design will need to
Have an imaginative concept and original interpretation of the brief.
Be competently executed with strong use of typography.
Appeal to a contemporary readership.
Show a good understanding of the marketplace.
Have a point of difference from the many other book covers it is competing against.
Adult Non-Fiction Cover Award
In this category, you should design a cover for a book that has helped climate change to take centre-stage in the everyday news.
The cover design needs to reflect the themes and message of the book in a clear and engaging way and appeal to the broadest possible audience.
The winning design will need to:
Have an imaginative concept.
Be an original interpretation of the brief.
Be competently executed with strong use of typography.
Appeal to the broadest possible audience for the book.
Show a good understanding of the marketplace.
Have a point of difference from other books that it will be competing against in the market.
Be able to sit on the shelves of a supermarket or ebook store as easily as it sits on those of more traditional bookshops.
Children's Cover Award
In this category, you are invited to design a cover look for Talking Turkeys to bring this original and unforgettable book to new readers.
Primarily aimed at children aged 8 to 12, your design should ensure that these poems are a must-read for every child.
The winning design will need to:
Have an imaginative concept.
Be an original interpretation of the brief.
Be competently executed with strong use of typography.
Appeal to the broadest possible audience for the book.
Show a good understanding of the marketplace.
Have a point of difference from other books that it will be competing against in the market.
Be able to sit on the shelves of a supermarket or ebook store as easily as it sits on those of more traditional bookshops.
Prizes:-
1st Prize: The winner of each category will receive a cash prize of £1,000 and be invited to spend four weeks in the Penguin Random House Design Studios on a work placement* if it can be offered as part of the prize, working on live briefs. The work placement will be paid at the current London Living Wage rate (subject to any applicable taxation).
2nd Prize: The winner of the 2nd Prize will receive a £500 cash prize.
3rd Prize: The winner of the 3rd Prize will receive a £350 cash prize.
Key Dates:-
- Form open for entries: 2 December 2020.
- Closing date for entries: 2 March 2021.
- Shortlist announcement: 27 April 2021.
- Closing date for shortlisted student’s final submissions: 12 May 2021.
- Winners announced: June 2021.
