Opportunity description

The Joke Waller-Hunter (JWH) Initiative supports young environmental leaders from developing countries by giving them the opportunity to apply for the 2019 Grant. The grant promotes lasting change towards a more sustainable world the environmental movement is in constant need of inspirational and skillful leadership. Young people working for environmental CSOs, especially in developing countries, often have few opportunities to develop leadership skills due to a lack of resources for schooling, training or practical learning. The grant can be applied for a wide range of activities, depending on the individuals’ need and interest. Most grantees use the funding for advancing either their knowledge and skills through studies, courses, trainings. or their expanding their experience through internships, exposure and exchange travels, participation in conferences, high level meetings etc.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Nominees should be ‘young’ people who work or are affiliated with environmental CSO’s in developing countries and emerging economies who have shown potential for and interest in further developing their leadership (We generally define ‘young’ as individuals under 35 years of age. However, it mainly refers to people who work in junior positions in their organizations who have the potential and ambition to develop into a leadership role).
  2. Nominees should be willing and have the potential to report on the development of their leadership capacities.
  3. There is a nomination process which means the participants can’t apply themselves. Environmental Civil Society Organizations and nominators working in these organizations identify suitable applicants within their organizations and nominate them.
  4. The nominator takes part of the responsibility for the participants’ genuineness and will co-sign the Memorandum of Understanding should the candidate be selected.
  5. The grant money can’t be used for implementing or developing any projects or paying indirect costs, administration fees or salaries of other persons besides the grantee.
  6. The nominator should be someone who knows the candidate well and is familiar with her/his aims and goals.
  7. Application for nominations must be done in English.
  8. The nominees should have proof of an excellent track record in:
    • Fully embracing the idea of sustainable development.
