Opportunity description

The scholarship will support postgraduate coursework students to access to postgraduate studies in the discipline of psychology, in particular, studies in clinical psychology. The Oei Family Scholarship was established in 2018 and maintained by gifts from the Oei Family, in honor of Emeritus Professor Tian Po Sumantri Oei and his contribution to the discipline of psychology at The University of Queensland.

Selection of Award:

The Scholarship is awarded to the applicant showing greatest merit, as demonstrated by:

  1. Evidence of one or more of financial disadvantage.
  2. Being from a Rural or Regional Area.
  3. Being the first in their family to attend university.
  4. Being from a non-English speaking background.
  5. Personal qualities, including leadership potential.
  6. Strength of the applicant’s personal statement, 500 words or less, demonstrating how the Scholarship funds will assist the completion of the student’s program.
  7. Any other matter that the selection committee considers to be relevant to the applicant's future success in the psychology profession.
  8. The selection committee may interview shortlisted applicants.
  9. Preference may be given to applicants who (in order of preference): are enrolled in the Master of Clinical Psychology.
  10. Can demonstrate a commitment to working in rural and/or remote locations after graduation.

Termination of Scholarship:

The University may terminate a Scholarship:

  • If the recipient does not show cause to the reasonable satisfaction of the University as provided for previous rules.
  • If the student commits serious misconduct.

Benefits

One Scholarship may be awarded per year, up to 2 years. The value of the Scholarship is $5,000 for each year for which it is held.

Eligibility criteria

An applicant is eligible for the Scholarship,

  1.  If the applicant: (a) submits an application to the Head, by the closing date for applications.
  2. Is enrolled, or is intending to enrol, in the first year of an Approved Program.
  3. Does not hold another scholarship.

Scholarship Conditions:

The recipient may hold the Scholarship for up to 2 years, subject to the recipient:

  • Continuing to be enrolled in an Approved Program.
  • Passing all courses in which they are enrolled in each semester the Scholarship is held.
  • Not hold another scholarship that the Head considers to be similar.
  • If a recipient fails to satisfy the past rules, the recipient must show cause to the Head, why the Scholarship
  • should not be canceled.
