Opportunity description

World of 7 Billion is inviting students all over the world to participate in the Student Video Contest. Create a short video – up to 60 seconds – about human population growth that highlights one of the following global challenges: Promoting Environmental Justice, Strengthening Global Health, Re-Imagining Industrial Systems.

Competition Theme:-

  • We now live in a world of over 7 billion people and demographers expect us to reach 9 billion by mid-century.

  • Human population growth exacerbates many of the innumerable challenges facing our global society.

  • Taking on these complex challenges and finding solutions will require understanding, cooperation and creativity.

  • Create a short video – up to 60 seconds – about human population growth that highlights one of the following global challenges: Promoting Environmental Justice, Strengthening Global Health, Re-Imagining Industrial Systems. All videos must include:

    • How population growth impacts the issue.

    • At least one idea for a sustainable solution.

Possible Topics:-

Consider narrowing your focus by concentrating on a subtheme within your topic. Possible subthemes include:

  • Promoting Environmental Justice – Food deserts, climate migrants, placement of hazardous waste sites, effects of the fossil fuel industry, redlining, mistreatment of indigenous peoples and land, environmental racism.

  • Strengthening Global Health – Access to health care, pandemics and emergency response, disease spread (zoonotic and vector-borne), maternal health, sanitation, health effects of environmental pollution.

  • Re-Imagining Industrial Systems – Procurement of raw materials, waste management, brownfields/CAFOs, energy production, production/distribution of consumer goods, occupational health and safety.

Terms and Conditions:-

  • All entries must be a digital video.
  • Each entry must focus on ONE of following global challenges as it relates to population growth:
  • Promoting Environmental Justice
  • Strengthening Global Health
  • Re-Imagining Industrial Systems
  • Students may work together in groups or submit entries as individuals.
  • The length of the video should not exceed 60 seconds (one minute), not including the 5 second title screen.
  • The judges’ decision is final. Entries will be judged by topic, with winners in each of the three global challenge areas: Sustaining Water Systems, Ensuring Economic Opportunities, Improving Climate Resiliency. Decisions will be made based on the World of 7 Billion Judging Rubric.

    • Six cash prizes will be awarded to the best international video by world region (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North America, South America).

World of 7 Billion is a program of Population Connection and is the only national program with a strong emphasis on curriculum and professional development for educators that focuses on human population issues. Since 1975, the program has developed age-appropriate curricula to complement students’ science and social science instruction about human population trends and their impacts on natural resources, environmental quality and human well-being. The program provides hands-on trainings nationwide that reach 10,000-12,000 educators annually.
