Opportunity description

Global Institute for Water Security announces a filmmaker competition entitled: Let’s Talk About Water – International Film Prize 2021. The competition aims to engender change and awareness around the various local, regional, and global water issues the world face through events and conversations that revolve around public screenings of films.

A captivating graphic- data visualization, animation, or even a personal story- can be the anchor for your film. always remember: keep it short, make it beautiful, will win a prize.

Benefits

If your film between the winners, you will get one of the following:

  1. GRAND PRIZE: USD 10,000.
  2. First Prize: USD 5,000.
  3. Second Prizes (4 total): USD 1,000 each.
  4. Viewer’s Choice: USD 1000.

Eligibility criteria

You must meet the following criteria:

  • You should over the age of 18. 
  •  An amateur or aspiring filmmaker, scientist, college student, master's candidate, or someone who simply cares about these issues and wants to make a difference 
  • Submitted films should be no longer than 2 minutes in length.
  • The film is about water issues and/or solutions.
  •  Films or any linked material must be subtitled in English. 
  •  It must be produced after January 1, 2020.
  •  All submissions should be 1920 X 1080 or landscape.
  • Videos to be submitted in either a MOV or MP4 file format.
  •  Materials not created by the filmmakers (images, music etc.) are allowed but should have documented permission from the creator.
  •  If information is obtained from another source must be appropriately documented.
  •  All external resources must be referenced in the end credits of the production.
  • Distinguishable logos or other commercial identification should not be visible in the video/film.
  •  Your submission to the LTAW International Prize indicates acceptance and agreement of the terms and conditions of the competition.

JUDGING process:

Your film will evaluate based on the following criteria:

  1. Theme & Impact: Does the video/film communicate a story about water?
  2. Science Communication: Is the story, or information effectively delivered?
  3. Creativity.
  4. Guidelines: Are film submission guidelines for the respective prize category followed?
  5. Production Value: Are production techniques used to best effect?  

About Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS):

The Global Institute for Water Security (GIWS) at the University of Saskatchewan is the topwater resources research institute in Canada and one of the most advanced hydrology research centers in the world. It was funded initially through the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Water Security (CERC), a $30-million, joint federal-provincial-university commitment between 2011-2018, and led by Founding Director Dr. Howard Wheater. GIWS is dedicated to helping protect the precious freshwater resources needed for the world’s growing demand for sustainable food production, mitigating the risk of water-related disasters such as floods, droughts, and fires.
