The ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI 2027) has opened submissions for the Student Design Competition 2027, an international competition for students to develop innovative solutions and designs in the field of Human-Robot Interaction.
The 2027 competition theme is:
Robots in Public Spaces
The competition invites student teams to design a robot or interactive system that addresses a real-world challenge in a public or semi-public space, such as airports, hospitals, museums, libraries, parks, train stations, and elderly care facilities.
Participants are not required to build an advanced or expensive robot. Entries may take the form of a physical robot, software system, prototype, simulation, interactive interface, service design, or user experience concept. Evaluation focuses more on the quality of the idea, design, and interaction between the robot and users than on technical complexity.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants may participate if they:
- Are students at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD level.
- Come from any academic discipline.
- Form a team of 2 to 5 students.
- May include team members from different universities or institutions.
- May involve faculty members as supervisors or co-authors, provided that the project remains student-led.
- Do not participate as a student member of more than one team.
