Universiti Malaya (UM) in Malaysia is accepting applications for the Universiti Malaya Bright Scholarship, a fully funded scholarship aimed at outstanding students from Malaysia and around the world who wish to pursue a PhD by Research at the university.
The scholarship is designed to attract high-achieving academic candidates from leading educational institutions and provides financial support that covers tuition fees in addition to a monthly stipend of MYR 3,500 for up to 42 months, making it one of the notable fully funded international scholarships in Malaysia for doctoral students.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be no older than 30 years old at the time of application.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.70 out of 4.00, or its equivalent.
- Hold a Master’s degree by Research, or a Mixed Mode Master’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.70 out of 4.00, or its equivalent.
- Not receive any other scholarship or financial funding from another institution or organization while benefiting from this scholarship.
English Language Requirements for International Students
International applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- IELTS: minimum score of 6.5.
- TOEFL: minimum score of 73.
- Or CEFR Level B2.
Application Deadline
Universiti Malaya states that applications for the UM Bright Scholarship are accepted throughout the year through two main application cycles:
- First cycle: until the end of April, for admission in October.
- Second cycle: until the end of September, for admission in February.
