The Gulbenkian Institute for Advanced Study (GIAS), part of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Portugal, has opened applications for the GIAS Fellowships 2027/2028, a funded international fellowship programme for academics, researchers, independent thinkers, retired professors, and artists from around the world.
The programme gives participants the opportunity to undertake a research residency in Lisbon, Portugal, where they can work independently on self-directed projects within an interdisciplinary intellectual environment. Fellows have limited scheduled commitments and dedicated time and space for reflection, research, and knowledge exchange with peers from different disciplines and nationalities

Eligibility criteria
Applicants may apply if they fit the nature of the programme and meet the following conditions:
- Applications are open to individuals of all nationalities, with no nationality restrictions.
- Academics and researchers working at universities may apply.
- Independent researchers, retired professors, and artists are also eligible to apply.
- The fellowship does not require a PhD degree or any specific academic qualification, although most applicants are expected to hold a doctorate.
- Portuguese language proficiency is not required.
- There are no strict restrictions on academic field, and most areas of research may be considered.
- The proposed project must not require the use of laboratories or experimental facilities.
- The project should not primarily be applied or practice-based.
- Fellows are expected to reside continuously at the institute during the agreed fellowship period, with short absences permitted only in exceptional cases.
