The Institute of Medical Science (IMS) at the University of Toronto in Canada is accepting applications from international students for its research-based graduate programmes, including the Master of Science (MSc), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and PhD Direct Entry tracks.
These programmes are designed for students who wish to pursue advanced academic and research careers in the medical and health sciences and work on research projects under the supervision of faculty members at the University of Toronto. Admission is primarily based on the strength of the applicant’s academic record, previous research experience, and the alignment between the student’s research interests and the proposed supervisor’s research area and project.
The Institute offers three main pathways:
- Master of Science (MSc) – a thesis-based research Master’s programme.
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – a doctoral programme for applicants who already hold a research-based Master’s degree.
- PhD Direct Entry – a direct-entry doctoral pathway for outstanding applicants with a Bachelor’s degree, without requiring a previous Master’s degree.

Eligibility criteria
MSc Requirements
- Hold a 4-year Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university, such as a BA, BSc, BEng, or MD.
- Achieve a minimum average of A-, 80%, or GPA 3.7/4.0 during the final two full years of undergraduate study.
- Have previous research experience, such as an undergraduate thesis, university research project, or summer research programme.
- International applicants must find a potential supervisor at IMS before submitting the application.
- A letter from the supervisor must be provided confirming their willingness to supervise the student and the availability of the required funding.
PhD Requirements
- Hold a 2-year research-based Master’s degree that includes the completion and defense of a thesis.
- Achieve a minimum grade of A- in the previous graduate programme.
- Achieve at least B+, 77%, or GPA 3.3/4.0 at the undergraduate level.
- Obtain approval from an IMS supervisor.
- Submit a Research Proposal.
PhD Direct Entry Requirements
This track is designed for outstanding applicants who do not hold a research-based Master’s degree. Requirements include:
- A 4-year Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
- A minimum average of A-, 80%, or GPA 3.7/4.0.
- Strong research experience.
- An outstanding record of scientific publications.
- Approval from a supervisor.
- Submission of a motivation letter and a research proposal.
