Bird Photographer of the Year (BPOTY) offers its annual international photography competition, one of the leading competitions dedicated to bird and nature photography. The competition aims to celebrate outstanding bird photography from around the world while also supporting nature conservation efforts.
The competition is open to both professional and amateur photographers of all nationalities.
Participants may submit their work in several categories, including:
Best Portrait
Birds in the Environment
Bird Behaviour
Birds in Flight
Black and White
Urban Birds
Creative Perspectives
Conservation
Benefits
Bird Photographer of the Year Grand Prize: GBP 3,000.
First place in each of the eight main categories: GBP 500.
Second place in each category: GBP 250.
Third place: a photography equipment voucher worth GBP 100.
Portfolio Award winner: GBP 500.
Conservation Award winner: GBP 500.
Entry to the youth competition is free, and winners receive vouchers for photography equipment.
Eligibility criteria
Applicants must:
Be photographers of any nationality and may apply from anywhere in the world.
Be either professional or amateur photographers.
Be 18 years old or above to enter the main competition.
Photographers aged 17 or under may enter the separate youth competition.
Submit photographs taken by themselves and hold the necessary rights to use them.
Submit images related to birds and entered in one of the competition categories.
Not submit images created using generative artificial intelligence.
Not use AI tools to add, remove, or substantially alter key elements of an image.
Follow ethical wildlife photography guidelines and avoid disturbing birds or damaging their habitats.
Adult participants may submit multiple images in accordance with the applicable entry fees.
Entry to the youth competition is free.
