The F.R.S.-FNRS, in collaboration with the Baillet Latour Fund, is accepting applications for the Baillet Latour Biomedical Award 2027, one of the leading international research awards and opportunities in the biomedical sciences. The award aims to support independent researchers in the early stages of their careers and enable them to develop their research teams and programmes in Belgium.

The 2027 edition focuses on Infection & Immunity. The proposed project must fall within basic, translational, or clinical biomedical research and must be carried out in Belgium. The award is open to researchers of any nationality who are affiliated with an eligible Belgian research institution at the application deadline.

Benefits

The award provides:

  • €1,000,000 in funding.
  • Funding duration: 5 years.
  • The funding may be used to cover personnel costs for staff working on the project.
  • Research and operating expenses may be covered.
  • Equipment required for the project may be funded.
  • The funding cannot be used to cover the salary of the Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Indirect costs and overheads are not eligible for funding.

Eligibility criteria

To apply for the award, the researcher must:

  • Be an independent early-career researcher.
  • Be of any nationality.
  • Hold a PhD degree.
  • Have received their PhD no more than 12 years before September 14, 2026, meaning the PhD must have been awarded on or after September 14, 2014. Extensions may be granted for eligible career interruptions.
  • Be affiliated, at the application deadline, with one of the following institutions:
    • A Belgian university.
    • A Belgian university hospital.
    • An eligible Belgian research institute.
  • Maintain their affiliation with the host institution until June 30, 2032.
  • Submit a project in the field of Infection & Immunity that will be carried out in Belgium.
