Opportunity description

The John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships (JSK) offer a funded nine-month journalism fellowship at Stanford University in the United States for the 2027-28 class. It is open to journalists and people who work in service of journalism. The deadline is December 2 at 1:00 p.m. Pacific time (2026), with no extensions or late applications.

About the Journalism Fellowship at Stanford

From September through May, fellows step away from daily newsroom work and live in residence at Stanford, treating the fellowship as a full-time commitment. Applicants do not need a project in mind; they need a question or challenge about journalism they cannot stop thinking about, and the drive to pursue it.

  • A small, global cohort of fellows who learn together.
  • Individual coaching and customized workshops from JSK directors, program partners and advisers.
  • Access to Stanford classes, talks and academic and creative offerings.
  • Weekly cohort meetings and biweekly one-on-one coaching sessions.
  • Occasional JSK and Stanford events, and public sharing of insights and reflections.
  • Membership in a global alumni network of hundreds of journalists. Spouses, partners and family are welcome in fellowship life.

Applications are evaluated in a multi-layered process that takes a few months. A small number of candidates are invited to a Zoom interview. The selection team includes JSK directors, fellowship alumni and, for U.S. fellowships, the JSK Selection Committee. Directors also host live webinars on October 21, November 5, November 6 and November 12, 2026.

Who Should Apply

The fellowship suits journalists, editors, producers, photographers, audience and community builders, publishers, and people in operations or strategy roles at news organizations or organizations that support journalists. Applicants should be intellectually restless and able to collaborate respectfully with people from different ideological backgrounds. It is not designed for people seeking a degree, or those working in public relations, in-house communications, government jobs or full-time academia.
