Opportunity description

Conservationist leadership program offers a grant opportunity for national or international non-governmental and government organizations to provide funding for conservation emergencies in UNESCO natural World Heritage sites. The Rapid Response Facility (RRF) funds a diverse range of projects and over $1 million spent in emergency response funding. You have the chance to apply all year round.

Eligibility criteria

You must follow the following criteria:

  1. The site must be located in an eligible country according to the OECD.
  2. Overseas territories of developed countries may occasionally be considered.
  3. The site must be a listed UNESCO natural World Heritage site (or an internationally recognized site of high biodiversity value).
  4. The RRF only funds actions at a site facing an ‘emergency’ threat to its biodiversity. It does not fund ongoing issues even if they require urgent action.
  5. The not grants to individuals.
  6. The RRF can make grants to any organization that has permission to work at the proposed site.
  7. Applicant organizations must be able to accept funds into an organizational bank account, directly from the UK in US Dollars (USD).
  8. Applications for actions outside the World Heritage site network must clearly demonstrate the global significance of the site’s biodiversity to qualify for funding.
  9. In rare cases, it may also consider other high-priority protected areas including:
  • Sites on the tentative World Heritage list.
  • Other eligible sites, which would need to be one of the following:
  • a site that directly impacts the ‘outstanding universal values’ (OUV) of a natural World Heritage site.
  • sites with other international designations such as:
  • UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserves.
  • Ramsar sites.

Please note:

  • UNESCO cultural World Heritage sites are not eligible for RRF funding.

Your application is selected based on the following emergency criteria: 

  1. Suddenness: How recently has the threat emerged or worsened?
  2. Predictability: How predictable was the situation?
  3. Time sensitivity: Will there be a measurable benefit if work starts immediately(within days/ 1-2 weeks).
  4. Duration and reversibility of impact: Does the threat have the potential to cause a long-lasting negative impact on the biodiversity value of the site?
