Opportunity description

The Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of São Paulo (IAG-USP) is accepting applications for a postdoctoral fellowship in high-energy astrophysics, gamma-ray astronomy, and detector development.

The fellowship is offered within a research project focused on developing and studying double-layer water Cherenkov detector designs for the Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO), while strengthening scientific integration between SWGO and the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO).

The selected researcher will develop and operate realistic simulations of the SWGO detector array, build simulation and data-reconstruction systems, compare different detector designs, and assess their efficiency, sensitivity, and accuracy.

The project is conducted in collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Germany and is jointly supported by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and the Max Planck Society.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and operate realistic simulations of the SWGO detector array.
  • Build an integrated simulation and data-reconstruction pipeline.
  • Compare different water Cherenkov detector designs and array configurations.
  • Evaluate energy and directional resolution, operational efficiency, background rejection, and sensitivity.
  • Study the scientific synergies between SWGO and CTAO.
  • Contribute to research programs involving transient sources, high-energy gamma rays, and cosmic rays.
  • Actively participate in the scientific collaborations of CTAO and SWGO.
  • Conduct research visits to the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg and the SWGO site.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must:

  • Hold a PhD in Physics, Astronomy, or a related field.
  • Have experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Detector simulations.
    • Atmospheric particle shower simulations.
    • Gamma-ray astrophysics.
    • Multi-messenger astrophysics.
  • Possess strong programming skills.
  • Have experience in data analysis.
  • Demonstrate excellent English proficiency.
  • Be willing to participate in an international research collaboration.
