The 2027 Colorado Prize for Poetry is an international opportunity for writers and poets from around the world to submit their work to the Center for Literary Publishing at Colorado State University. The prize aims to recognize outstanding poetic talent and encourage excellence in literature and poetry.

The competition is open to writers of all nationalities, except current students, alumni, and employees of Colorado State University. It offers poets the opportunity to gain international exposure, with the goal of selecting an outstanding new poetry manuscript for professional publication and presentation to a wider audience.

Benefits

  • A cash prize of USD 2,500.

  • Publication of the winning poetry collection as a book.

  • Distribution of the book through the University Press of Colorado.

  • The winner will receive royalties after book sales recover the USD 2,500 advance.

  • After that point, royalties are paid at 10% of net revenue.

  • The first print run consists of 500 copies.

  • The entry fee includes a one-year subscription to Colorado Review.

Eligibility criteria

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Writers from outside the United States are eligible to apply, and applicants are not required to reside in Colorado or elsewhere in the United States.

  • Applicants must submit a complete poetry manuscript in English.

  • The manuscript must be between 48 and 100 pages in length.

  • Individual poems may have been previously published, but the complete collection must not have been published before, including through self-publishing.

  • New and Selected collections are not accepted.

  • The subject matter and style of the poems are open, with no specific restrictions.

  • Translated works are not accepted; the poems must be the applicant’s original work written in English.

  • Artificial intelligence may not be used to generate, revise, or edit the manuscript, except for standard spelling and grammar-checking tools.
