Opportunity description
Yeovil Literary Prize invites aspiring writers throughout the world to participate in a writing competition and get a unique chance to enter five very different categories of writing.
Competition Categories:
- Novel: Synopsis and Opening Chapters (combined maximum 10,000 words)
- Short Story: Maximum 2,000 words
- Poetry: Maximum of 40 Lines
- Children’s and Young Adult Novel: First 3000 words plus a 500-word synopsis.
- Writing Without Restrictions

- For Novel:
- 1st: £1250
- 2nd: £500
- 3rd: £125
- For Short Story, Poetry, and Children’s and Young Adult Novel Categories:
- 1st: £600
- 2nd: £250
- 3rd: £125
- For Writing Without Restrictions:
- 1st: £250
- 2nd: £125
- 3rd: £75
- Local Prize: Western Gazette Best Local Writer Award (£100)
Eligibility criteria
You should follow the following rules:
- Entries must be the work of the entrant (who must be over 16), in English, (not translated into English).
- Must NOT have been previously self-published, broadcast, or accepted for publication.
- Entries that have won or are currently shortlisted in other writing competitions DO qualify for entry.
- Only ONE entry per Entry Form.
- No corrections will be accepted, or refunds given.
- Entries must be typed using double line spacing with pages numbered and word count shown at the end.
- Entries cannot be returned; therefore, entrants should retain their own copy.
Please note: Winners will be informed by September 15th 2023.
Entry Fees:
- Novel: £14.50
- Short Story: £8
- Poetry: £5 per poem
- Children’s/Young Adult Novel: £12.50
- Writing Without Restrictions: £6
The Yeovil Literary Prize:
The Yeovil Literary Prize was started in 2002, by YCAA (Yeovil Community Arts Association). It has gained recognition as an established fixture in the international literary calendar. The Yeovil Literary Prize aims to promote Creative Writing and provide a genuine opportunity for aspiring writers, everywhere, as well as to support the YCAA in its future role by raising funds to support the arts.
