Opportunity description
Winter Stations has opened applications for its 2027 International Design Competition, an annual competition held in Toronto, Canada, inviting artists, architects, designers, students, and creatives from around the world to develop interactive art and design installations for public spaces.
The competition challenges participants to reimagine the lifeguard stations along Toronto’s beaches and transform them during the winter into interactive public art installations. The winning designs will be constructed and displayed along the waterfront for six weeks.
The theme for the 2027 edition is “Monument,” inviting participants to rethink the concept of a monument and consider what deserves to be commemorated in our time—whether a person, community, emotion, value, or aspiration for the future.
Benefits
Each winning artist or team whose project is selected for construction will receive a CAD 2,000 honorarium.
Runners-up will receive CAD 500.
A materials budget of up to CAD 5,000 will be allocated for each selected project.
A budget of up to CAD 10,000 will be allocated for labor and construction costs.
Winning designs will be physically constructed and transformed into public art installations.
Winning installations will be displayed for approximately six weeks along the waterfront in Toronto, Canada.
Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their work to thousands of visitors as part of an open-air exhibition.
Entries will be evaluated in an international competition by a jury specializing in art, design, architecture, and urban planning.
